The Specials @ Pier 26, Hudson River Park, NYC
July 18, 2013 | Concert Photography
The Specials returned to NYC last night and rocked Pier 26 in Hudson River Park in NYC. It wasn’t too hot outside when the sun went down, and the band was in fine form!
Read my full review of the show over at ReadJunk.com.
The last time I shot the Specials, it was at Terminal 5 and I wasn’t really happy with the shots I got. Not sure if it was the lighting back then or I just had slower lenses. This time, I was much happier with what I got. The lighting was better and the sun just went down so there was a bit of natural light as well.
Roddy is always a treat to photograph because he gives you interesting poses. I always have a tough time of photographing Lynval because he’s always bouncing around. Horace came out front a few times which was nice since he was way in the back. I got a couple of good shots of John drumming in the background. About time someone properly light the drummer, the forgotten band member in bands. Terry doesn’t really move around a hell of a lot so he just has 1 or 2 poses and that’s it.
I was happy to have a photo pass for the show (thanks Horace & Clare), but would have been awesome to get All Access just to get an awesome shot of the band playing with Manhattan and the crowd in front of them. It was a gorgeous night though, and happy with the shots I got. For the first two songs, I used the 70-200mm f2.8 lens and then switched to a wide angle 24-70mm f2.8 during the third song. I was trying to shoot way in the back later on and only managed to get one cool photo of the band with Roddy doing a big kick.
