Dave Hause @ Webster Hall, NYC – 7.24.12

July 25, 2012 | Concert Photography

Dave Hause of the Loved Ones opened up for the Gaslight Anthem last night at Webster Hall in New York City. Shooting at Webster Hall isn’t ideal for me because the photo pit (when there is one) is a nightmare. But musically speaking, Dave was great!

You can read my full review of the show at ReadJunk.com.

Before Dave went on, another photographer and I were puzzled in how to get into the photo pit. Webster Hall likes to piss off photographers by making the photo pit the smallest size possible. I couldn’t see that there was an entrance way, so the only way we could get in was go on the stage and into the pit. We climbed down into the pit and I could barely fit. I’m not saying I’m a toothpick but you have to be less than a 100 pounds to feel comfortable in there. I managed to awkwardly walk towards the middle. Then we were told we had to leave the other way, which would be even more awkward for me and the crowd members we were blocking. I don’t even think I could rest my feet on the ground, that’s how little space there was. See, the rock photographer isn’t glamorous at all!

Dave Hause did his thing, and the lighting was okay for his set. It was tough shooting where I was because the back lighting would blast you in the face (and well the camera too). It’s better to be on the sides for this venue. After the third song, I climbed to the other side and I probably accidentally knocked out the fan plug for Dave. Could have been me, or someone else? Who knows but sorry if it was me. I stayed towards the pit entrance and little section by the speakers for his set. I actually got better photos there using my 70-200m f2.8 lens.

Webster Hall should either give photographers a proper photo pit or just don’t include one and let us shoot up in the balcony then. That’s what I’m going to do next time I’m there I think.

Anyway…..here’s the photos.
