The Pogues @ Roseland, NYC – 3.13.09
March 14, 2009 | Concert Photography
It’s that time of year again when The Pogues make their way over to the US for their annual St Patrick’s Day tour. I wasn’t going to skip this and glad I didn’t! The Pogues played for an hour and half and I can’t wait to see them again next year (if they come over here again.)
I went to the city early last night, just because I didn’t want to sit in traffic which I ended up doing anyway. Ugh. Grabbed some food before the show and waited on line in the cold (although not as cold as last year!). Got inside and then had to wait for an hour for my passes. I misses the opening act, which was Franz Nicolay of The Hold Steady. From the last few songs I heard, wasn’t really into it that much. Would have still liked to take pictures of him though. The Pogues came on time this year at 9:15 and like usual, had to wait for the 2nd song to shoot.
2 things I noticed this year. Shane MacGowan is thinner and looking healthier, and the stage lighting was a lot better. Last few years it has been too dark and hard to capture the show. This year, it was the same color scheme, but the white spot lights up front helped out things A LOT! I’m really happy with the way my photos came out this year. Since there are so many people in the band, it’s hard to get photos of everyone..but I tried. I made an attempt to get some shots of Andrew Ranken, the drummer. Bummer that they came out blurry or the focus wasn’t in right spot. Spider, Shane, Philip were light the best.
The band played a lot of the usual songs you’d hear at the show, plus nice additions of “Cotton Fields,” “Lullaby of London” and “Metropolis.” I would have loved to hear “Misty Morning Albert Bridge” or “Lorelei.” The slower songs were a hit with the fans this year, as a lot of people had their girls by their side, dancing & swaying…myself included. If you get a chance, make it to the remaining Pogues show in the next few days because they certainly know how to put on a great show!
Thanks to Philip for everything! (as always)
