The Mahones @ Studio at Webster Hall, NYC – 11.20.13
November 22, 2013 | Concert Photography
The Mahones are quickly becoming one of my favorite bands to photograph. They are a high energy Celtic punk band and always deliver a fun performance!
I’ve been a fan of The Mahones for over 10 years but I’ve only seen them play twice (both this year). The show ended up being another late night show, which I’m not really a fan of. It was suppose to start at 9:30 but ended up started later, and each band seemed like it took forever to get on stage. Things could have been sped up a little but whatever, it was still a good time. The Mahones took the stage at midnight and played for an hour. It seemed like a lot of people were there for Jeremy and The Harlequins band, and didn’t stick around for the Mahones, which is a shame. The Mahones are so fun live, and it’s particularly enjoyable watching Katie Kaboom hair whipping and playing her accordion and Finny rocking out with his guitar.
Since I saw them earlier this year, I knew what to expect from them and stayed towards the middle of the stage to get a lot of shots of Katie headbanging. I like when Finny and Katie pose together and They are arched back/forward. It’s “their thing” and if you photograph their set, you have to get that at least once or you failed. I didn’t know Finny was going to throw his guitar to Dom The Bomb behind the drum set at the end and only caught a little bit of it. I wish I was in a better spot for that but there’s always next time. I did get some fun animated gifs of Katie Kaboom though!
Just like the other sets, the lighting was hit or miss. The front lighting was dim or barely there but the back lighting was really colorful & smokey. They just need some white front lighting and the club would have some decent lighting. I shot this set mostly at ISO 6400 and sometimes 5000 as you can tell with the graininess of the photos. If I had my 70-200 lens with me, I would have used that a little but from the back of the club but stayed up close with my other lens. Some people were using flash but didn’t have it with me. I’ve just learned not to use it.
