Frank Turner @ Hammerstein Ballroom, NYC – 3.2.10

Frank Turner was the second act for the Flogging Molly show at Hammerstein Ballroom. Frank delivered a great set filled with folk punk anthems that got the crowd moving, clapping, and singing along. I never saw Frank Turner before and glad to finally have seen his live act!

I’m a big fan of Frank’s and glad to have finally seen him. I must play his albums throughout the day everyday at work. The set he played was practically perfect for me. He played all the songs I wanted him to play like “Photosynthesis,” “Reasons Not to Be An Idiot,” “Love Ire and Song,” “The Road,” “Sons of Liberty” and others! Photography-wise, the lighting was okay – mostly reds and other colors. I fixed the red lighting in post production, and thankfully there was a bit of white light to offset the red lighting. I don’t mind red lighting when there’s white spotlights in there.

For the first 3 songs, Frank didn’t move around all that much so I did the best I could with that. I tried to use different lenses to capture Frank and his band’s live performance. I thought the 50mm f1.4 and 18-70mm f3.5-4.5 were ideal for this show. I used my 70-200mm f2.8 lens for a little bit just to get some closeups. I saw some photographers using this the entire show and just didn’t see the logic in it. It’s good to get a few close-ups but not the entire show. That’s my opinion anyway.

I really hope to shoot more of Frank Turner in the future, and it might be fun to shoot him in a more intimate setting next time. Though it was nice to move around and get different angles in the photo pit.
