Seven Nations @ Blender Theater at Gramercy, NYC – 9.10.09

September 18, 2009 | Concert Photography

Seven Nations were the opening act for Young Dubliners at Blender Theater at Gramercy last Thursday in New York City. Their mixture of Celtic, rock n roll, and country folk were a perfect combination for an opening act for the Young Dubs.

I won’t go into the full review of their set since I already did that over at ReadJunk.com. I never been to Blender Theater at Gramercy but they have excellent lighting. For Seven Nations’ set, lots of white spotlights were used which made things easier for me. Sometimes there would be blues, reds, greens and yellows. I like the positions of the lighting as well since they show up in a lot of the shows. The stadium seating in the background is also helpful because you can get some atmosphere shots as well. I would definitely love to take pictures there again, but not sure how it would be if the place was sold out. Do they have a photo pit there for rowdier shows?

Since I had the chance to shoot most of the set, I used a variety of lenses. Mainly just used the 3 I always use. The 50mm f1.4, 18-70mm f3.5-4.5 and 70-200mm f2.8. I used the later a lot because I didn’t feel like being close to the band. Since there wasn’t many people in the crowd at the time, I just shot further backed and took my time. I sometimes took shots from my knees so I wasn’t completely in the way of the audience.
