The Alternate Routes @ Highline Ballroom, NYC – 5.27.09

June 4, 2009 | Concert Photography

The Alternate Routes opened up for Carbon Leaf last week at Highline Ballroom in New York City. The band hails from Connecticut and have a indie folk, bluesy rock sound. The band is filled with energy and sound really cool. If you want a full review of the concert, read the review at ReadJunk.com.

There wasn’t a photo pit for this show (not sure there is one at Highline Ballroom). So I had to work my way up to the crowd since I show up half hour before showtime. I got a decent spot, one person back from the stage. It was tough getting photographs of each member in the band but I tried my best. I used 3 lenses for both Alternate Routes and Carbon Leaf. I used the 70-200mm f2.8, 18-70mm f3.5-4.5, and the 50mm f1.5. I felt I got the best photos out of the 50mm f1.4 but it’s limited to only that focal length. The fun thing about there being no photo pits is you can shoot the entire concert. But there’s always negatives. Since I didn’t get there earlier enough, I had to wait for people to move their heads the right way to get full body shots.

For most of the set, there was another female photographer there that was a bit annoying to the crowd. I stood in my spot the entire time, but this girl was moving all over the place. I wasn’t using my flash and I won’t unless there’s no lighting at all. But her flash was pointing right into my eyes when she was near me. Which was a lot of the time it seemed. *Note to other photographers out there* if you use your speedlight, be sure to point the damn thing up into the ceiling and not into people’s face. It’s rude and annoying, and I’m a photographer too! Imagine what the audience felt like! Or better yet, the band!

Enough of my ranting on that subject. Anyway, Alternate Routes played a great set and I’m going to check out their releases. Their latest one came out in February on Vanguard Records.
