I’ve been waiting a long time to see the (almost) original lineup of the Specials perform. I knew it was only a matter of time before the legendary ska band from the UK would play over in the States. I wasn’t happy that the show was at Terminal 5 because I think that venue is one of the worst venues I’ve ever been in. Bad location, awful sight lines, crappy sound and it just makes for a miserable concert experience. But I tried to deal with that stuff and just have fun. I was on assignment for Prefixmag.com, where you might have seen my photos already.

I’ve been a fan of The Kooks since their first album “Inside In/Inside Out” was released back in 2006. They are popular over in the UK but now they are just as popular over here in America. They have a new album out now called “Konk” and one of their stops on their tour were two nights in New York. Originally, the band was only going to play on June 11th (today) but they added another date when the concert sold out quickly. When that concert was added, I decided to get tickets & try to score a photo pass. I did get a pass and manged to get some great photos of the band!

The Morning Benders were the opening band for The Kooks at Terminal 5 last night in New York City. They are an indie/pop rock from Berkley, California and really warmed up the young crowd. I wasn’t familiar with the band beforehand but was impressed with their music. I’ll probably check out Morning Benders now that I saw them live. They played for at least a half hour and I shot the first third songs.

I’ve been a fan of DeVotchKa for over 2 years now. Right before Little Miss Sunshine came out, I found their music on MySpace and thought they were unique and had a cool sound. Then Little Miss Sunshine came out, and I became a huge fan. Last time (also first time) I saw the band, they performed at Spiegeltent at South Street Seaport. I loved their set, even though the show was extremely late in the night. They had Nick’s girlfriend doing the aerial acrobatics and I was really looking forward to seeing that again. A year later, the band played Terminal 5 in the meat packing district. Thankfully the show got over at 11pm!

Basia Bulat is a Canadian pop singer/musician who has been supporting DeVotchKa on the “Mad and Faithful Telling” tour. Her music was interesting, I thought it sounded great live. I’m curious to hear how her albums are though. Her style is a mixture of pop, folk and indie rock and the crowd really liked her set. I’m not sure what songs she played but I prefer the more upbeat ones. The slow tracks were okay too but I’d rather hear faster songs.
