Everytime I shoot Flogging Molly, I can’t decide who i’m going to focus on. Sometimes it’s Dave, and then sometimes it’s Matt. This time around I wanted to get an equal chance to all the band members. I think I concentrated on Dennis the most because he was the most animated. Dave and Bridget do their thing, Nathan and Matt scream and move around a bit but Dennis is the one jumping and kickin’. Some of the songs that the Celtic punk band played were: “Selfish Man,” “Requiem For A Dying Song,” “Drunken Lullabies,” “Float,” “Tobacco Island” and “Devil’s Dance Floor.” For this set, I used my 18-70mm f3.5-4.5 and 70-200mm f2.8 lenses. I wanted to get a few closeups of Dave and other members, but for the most part I stuck with the kit lens.

The first song Frank Carter and the rest of the band performed on stage. Frank was pacing back and forth, looking mighty pissed off. I guess you kind of have to when you’re in a HC band. At one point he was slamming his microphone to the ground, and it ended up not working. Or maybe he did that because it wasn’t working? I got some shots of him and the rest of the band, including a cool jumpshot from Frank. I heard after the first song, Frank goes into the crowd for the rest of the set. Well that was definitely the case, and I didn’t want to miss out on the fun.

I used to be in hardcore dance pits, errr..usually on the edge of them actually. But I never really had my camera with me before so I had to keep both eyes open. One to take shots and the other to watch for dancers, moshers, anyone who was going to cause problems really. Frank was enjoying himself in the pit and was laughing at the kung fu moves that PAHC kids like to do in the pits. It was tough getting shots of Frank because he was usually being mauled for the microphone. But I think I managed to get some good shots of him. At one point, he told everyone to get a circle pit around the Hurley soundboard tent, which meant I had to move back because I was right in the middle. The same thing happened last year when Street Dogs wanted everyone to do that.

I wish I had more time to shoot their set besides 3 songs because they go into the crowd and do even more jumping throughout the set. Justin Sane didn’t really jump that much in the first 3 songs, but after that I saw him jumping around like crazy. Sadly, I didn’t get any shots of Pat Thetic the drummer. He makes these hilarious drum faces when back there, but I just focused on Justin, Chris and Chris this time around. For this set, I used my 18-70mm and 70-200mm lenses.

I don’t know what it is, but a lot of the bands music these days features guys in girl jeans and they are all rolled up. Why not where shorts then? I don’t get it. But anyway, this set was pretty straight forward. I tried to get shots of everyone in the band but the singer probably has the most shots out of the band members. I wanted to get some close-ups of the faces so I switched to my 70-200mm f2.8 lens during the second song. For some reason, I always forget to do that during the break between songs.

The band came on around 11:55am on the main stage and the crowd seemed to really like them. I didn’t but that’s okay, I don’t have to like everybody. I was there for the punk veterans for the most part but wanted to check out some other bands. The frontman of Devil Wears Prada gave some great poses, especially when he was screaming close to the front of the stage. For this set, I used my 18-70mm f3.5-4.5 lens.
