Saw Doctors @ Nokia Theatre, NYC – 3.14.09

March 19, 2009 | Concert Photography

The Saw Doctors came back to NY for their annual St Patrick’s Day shows. Nokia Theatre has been the place the band has played for a few years now. Everytime I come to Nokia, I love it! Saw Doctors fans were treated to a great setlist, and excellent performance by the band.

Instead of talking about the band’s performance, I’ll just skip to the photography side of things. You can read my full review over at ReadJunk.com here. After shooting the opening band Bearfoot, I knew the lighting was going to be good. Shooting the Saw Doctors at Nokia was probably the best lighting I ever shot with. It was colorful, and bright enough to get some really cool shots and didn’t give me any headaches at all.

I’ve only shot at Nokia Theatre 2 or 3 times, and each time I get good results. I think it’s because the stage is low enough for you to get some close-up shots, but the back lighting is low enough that you can capture some lighting beams. I like when I can get those type of shots. The Saw Doctors were placed mid-stage and in the back so I had to use my 70-200mm f2.8 lens to get some close-ups and get the other members in the back. Leo and Davy came up to the front of the stage a lot of the time so that was good. Thankfully I had my 18-70mm f3.5 lens with me as well because that was used for the majority of the set. That lens isn’t fast at all but the lighting was so bright that it turned out fine. After the 3 songs, I ventured through the sold out crowd to go back to the comfy stadium seating in the back. Throughout the show, I was using my 70-200mm lens and got some cool stage shots. I also managed to take a few funny photos of a man who was going crazy in the seating and demanding every stand up and dance. Of course no one was. He was definitely entertaining to say the least.

Thanks to the band for hooking me up with the passes!
