Backyard Superheroes @ Starland Ballroom, Sayreville, NJ – 7.29.17

Backyard Superheroes opened up the Mighty Mighty Bosstones show at Starland Ballroom in Sayreville, NJ. You can read my full review of the show over at ReadJunk.com.

I only shot Backyard Superheroes once before and that was at Starland Ballroom as well. I sort of remember they were fun to shoot but I thought they were even better this time as well. Gary the sax player was the most energetic and moving around the stage a lot. It made for some great photos. I wish I was able to shoot beyond 3 songs, since he later on went on top of the side bar to play and then jumped into the crowd.

The lighting at Starland is typical and they use the same few colors for different songs. I wish they would get rid of the red lighting setup though. At least it’s easier to work with the blues and oranges and other colors. You’ll notice when I have black & white photos, the lighting was probably red. Since the stage is so low, I worked with the 24-70mm f2.8 lens and for one song, the 14-24mm 2.8 lens. If I had to two bodies, I would have just went between those 2 lens more. But, I’m happy with the shots I got.
