The Revival Tour 2013 @ Irving Plaza, NYC – 3.28.13
March 30, 2013 | Concert Photography
Out of all the years that the Revival Tour has been happening, this was my first time seeing it. I can’t believe I haven’t seen this yet. I’m glad I got the chance to the other night because it was a lot of fun and to shoot the entire show in the photo pit was a thrill.
If you want to read my review of the overall show, head over to ReadJunk.com since I’ll be talking photography stuff here.
I wasn’t sure there was going to be a photo pit at Irving Plaza because it didn’t really need it. But I’m all for photo pits so I could get as close to the stage as possible. I arrived so early I would have gotten a decent spot by the stage if that was the case though. It was a rare day at Irving Plaza because not only did the photographers have all access in the photo pit, the lighting was simply amazing. I want to shake the lighting guy’s hand who was there that night (or maybe it was Revival’s lighting guy) because I got some shots that I will be looking back many years from now and appreciating.
Since we had the chance to shoot the entire show in the pit, it was best to pace yourself and pick your spots when shooting. Sometimes we all would just sit down and wait for the moment we thought was worth capturing. That usually happened when others joined the stage. For the entire set, I used my 24-70mm f2.8 lens and sometimes switch between FX and DX mode so I could get some closer shots. Ah the beauty of a high megapixel camera like the Nikon D800! I did break out the 70-200 f2.8 for a couple of songs though but mainly stuck with the wide angle lens.
Like I said, the lighting was simply amazing! The colors in the back lighting at times were beautiful, especially the streaky lighting. The shots I got of Joe Ginsberg and Chuck Ragan were some of my favorites I took this year or ever actually. I was gearing myself up for disappointment with these shots if there wasn’t a pit so I’m glad that it was there. I even thanked the Irving Plaza guys about it.
I hope I get to shoot more Revival Tour shows in the future!
