The Saw Doctors returned to NYC and played another excellent set in front of a sold crowd at Irving Plaza. They are always one of my favorite bands to photograph!
I wrote a full review over at ReadJunk.com, so if you’re wanting to know more about the actual performances, check that out.
Mostly every year when the Saw Doctors come around, I have to go to their show and photograph their set. It’s something about their performance and their music that I just love. Davy does his Tommy K dance (which I got a funny animated gif of) and Leo just does his thing and rocks out with his guitar. The rest of the band are more stationary but I get a kick when Anthony just gives a smile for the camera (which he did). Their drummer was wailing about on the skins, and thankfully got some shots of him doing so this time around. Sometimes I get drummer shots, sometimes I don’t but thankfully got some this time around. I remembered to get some close-ups of Kevin this time because I always forget him in the back. Towards the end of the 2nd or 3rd song, I broke out the 70-200mm f2.8 lens to get the closeups. I mainly used the 24-70mm f2.8 lens, which is more than adequate at Irving Plaza.

The last few years, the Saw Doctors lighting has been outstanding but this time it was tough at times. I’m not a fan of the red, like most concert photographers, but if its mixed with white front lighting then it’s okay. The lighting didn’t get brighter until the second song though. But it is what it is and I think I managed okay with it. I just prefer if there was more white light in front, but it’s really up to the band and the lighting guy. It got brighter after the 3rd song, which is pretty typical sometimes. I’m still very happy with the shots I got though.
