The Young Dubliners are currently working on a new album, where you can make a pledge to help them make the album. I already purchased a t-shirt and album download in support of the new release, and I recommend doing so if you like these guys. How can you not like the Young Dubs!? They gave pledgers a treat already with giving them 2 song downloads from the album. But in the middle of working on the new album, the band is out on the road most of the time. They stopped at The Studio at Webster Hall in NYC and put one a fun set (like usual).
The Young Dubliners went on around 10pm, so I didn’t get to the show right away. I wanted to watch the NY Red Bulls a little bit and then head over. I came in to a Pogues cover band playing called Streams of Whiskey. After them was House of Essex, which were good but sort of different than the other acts that played. The Young Dubs came on after 10pm and played “Bodhran,” which is always a good tune to start with. They played “We The Mighty,” which is the first song we heard off their new album. Another is an awesome instrumental. I also enjoyed hearing “Brown Dog,” “Come Back Home,” “Howaya Girls,” “Banshee,” and “Rosie.” They may not have been that many people at the club last night but it was certainly a fun time! Practically the entire club was dancing and having a good time. I was singing along and taking pictures.
The lighting was better for YD, since the other bands had just red & blue lighting, which is a concert photo killer. I started out taking pictures up front but got out of the way when I saw people dancing all over the place. I didn’t feel like looking through my camera and all of a sudden seeing a body flying into me haha. I used the 24-70mm f2.8 for wide shots of the band but for a lot of the set, I used the 70-200mm f2.8 just to stay back from the stage a little.
Here’s what the setlist looked like last night, taken with my crappy Droid Razr Maxx:
The band is still on tour so if they are playing your town, check them out. It’s a guaranteed good time!
After the show, I tried to get to PATH train before it goes to both Hoboken and Journal Square (I just need the JS one) and according to Google Maps, the train was suppose to get there at 11:52. Well I had 10 minutes from the club to get over there and was walking fast and getting shin splints. Then I was a block away and 5 minutes from 11:52 and I decided to run. I realized I was on the wrong street so looped around the block into the subway station and hear the train, I try to run and getting back spasms in the process as well. I’m a wreck basically. Just as I get through the ticket booth thing, the subway closes it doors right in my face and takes off. I really, really, really hate that feeling. So next time, I think I’ll just walk and if I get the train, I get it. Beats having to run to the station in hopes of catching the train in time and then missing it, covered in sweat. Not fun. But the concert, that was fun!
