The Saw Doctors @ Irving Plaza, New York, NY – 3.10.12
March 11, 2012 | Concert Photography
It’s been 3 years since last seeing The Saw Doctors (way too long!), but they always put on one hell of a show! Besides the fantastic music, they are always a blast to shoot as well because of their stage presence and wonderful lighting.
I’ll have a more in-depth review over at ReadJunk.com soon but I’ll talk about the photography portion of the show here. The Saw Doctors opened up with “Exhilarating Sadness,” which has always been a favorite of mine. The next track, as if you couldn’t tell if you are a Saw Doctors fan, is “Tommy K.” I always like taking pictures of them playing that song because Davy and the rest of the band spell out T and K with their body. The third song I was in the pit for was the brilliant cover of “Downtown.” Couldn’t think of anyone better to cover that song!
What I loved about this set was the fact that the lighting was so nice! Awesome colors in the background and bright white lights in front. It’s a photographer’s dream to have such a show so bright. It’s one thing to have colors but not to have good front lighting just sucks sometimes. Thankfully I didn’t have that problem. I wish I had a wider lens to get the entire band in frame but I tried my best. Last time I shot their show I had some good band shots but couldn’t get to that this time since Irving Plaza was sold out and very packed. For this set, I used the 24-70mm f2.8 lens the entire time. It’s a great lens to have, especially shows at Irving Plaza.
Thanks to the Saw Doctors and management for always being on top of things when it comes to photo passes!
