I’ve been a fan of the Young Dubliners for 8 years but this was the only 2nd time of seeing them live. Bassist Brendan Holmes, who’s also a fellow photographer, hooked me up with passes for the evening so that was really nice of him. My girlfriend Kristen had a class in CT earlier in the day, so I had to travel to NYC via CT. Well, first had to go to Suffern where my twin brother lived then down to NYC. The doors opened at 6pm but the concert didn’t start til 8pm. We arrived at 7:30pm and we were shocked that there weren’t that many people there. The band hasn’t been to NYC in awhile so that surprised me. Tables were setup for eating and since I was really hungry, I had to get some food. The band came on around 8pm and rocked out regardless of the size of the crowd.

Happy 03th birthday to me! Last Saturday was my 30th birthday..and I guess my twin brother Matt’s birthday too. I can’t believe I’m 30 already, it’s quite depressing. I was trying to figure out what to do for my birthday this year. I wanted to put on a show but I didn’t have the money for that. I was going to go away to Montreal with Kristen but again, that whole money thing. So I invited some friends over for a night of just hanging out, eating junk food and just having a good time.

I was suppose to shoot the Dropkick Murphys last August in Scranton, PA but there was a problem with the list. Which was pretty much the case this time around again. But thankfully things got worked out in time for me to shoot the Bosstones and Dropkicks. The Dropkick Murphys have gotten super popular since the last time I shot their set. Their music has appeared in the movie The Departed and pretty much everyone knows who they are now. I remember seeing DKM back when there was 4 members in the band. Now the group has 7 or 8 members. It’s interesting to see how a band evolves over the years. But the band certainly draws in an audience and they still have a great live show to boot!

The last time I saw The Mighty Mighty Bosstones, it was about 8 years ago? Has it been that long?! I honestly don’t remember the last time I saw them but it definitely felt like they never left. The band came out in their signature ugly plaid suits, and I was even sporting an ugly plaid shirt as well. I was pumped to see the band again after all these years. This was the first time shooting the band, and thankfully got my photo pass 10 minutes before the band went on.

I first heard Rachid Taha on the Black Hawk Down soundtrack. I liked the song when I heard it but didn’t check him out any further at the time. Then I just kept happening to listen to the song “Barra Barra” over time and finally decided to get some of Rachid’s music. My favorites album are “Diwan” and “Diwan 2″ but I also love his cover of the Clash’s Rock The Casbah. Once I found out he was performing a free concert in Central Park, I knew I wanted to experience one of his shows. The day was rainy and humid but that didn’t stop the masses from seeing this French-Algerian Rai-Punk legend.

Dengue Fever played second for the Rachid Taha concert at SummerStage. They mix Cambodian pop music with psychedelic rock. I’ve heard of their name a lot but never heard their music or seen them live until that day. I liked what I heard from their show and the crowd certainly liked their set as well.

Apollo Heights were the opening band at the Rachid Taha concert at Central Park SummerStage in New York City last Saturday. The event was free yet rainy at times. I never been to SummerStage before so it was cool to finally to have been there and shoot a concert there as well. Also, this concert was shot for Prefixmag.com.
