Mensrea features members of Gwar, and that’s who they opened up for at the Chance last night. I never heard of them but they hail from Richmond area, just like Gwar (even though they claim they are from Antarctica). The band plays metal/hardcore and I really liked these guys. It’s been ages since I’ve been to a metal or hardcore show so it was nice change-up to hear these guys at the Chance.
Since the Chance didn’t open up the balcony yet, I was stuck downstairs to shoot most of this set. I was standing by the left hand side of the stage, towards the back. I call it “my spot” since that’s the spot I used to get for every Chance show with my Dad, twin brother and friends. Once I saw that the place was getting more filled up, I knew it was only a matter of time before the Chance would open up the balcony. My girlfriend managed to get a nice spot upstairs so I could finish shooting Mensrea and then Gwar.
It was hard to shoot photos of these guys because they were so quick on stage. At least the singer was. I still managed to get a lot of great photos of them, thanks to the D300’s high ISOs. I mainly shot around 3200 ISO for this set, which I haven’t really done since I got the new camera. I try to stick around 1000-1600 ISO for most sets but I think I might stick with 3200 ISO for poorly lit shows. Once I got upstairs, the lighting seemed to be brighter so that was helpful. Here’s a few selected shots of Mensrea:
