Basia Bulat @ Terminal 5, NYC – 5.20.08

Basia Bulat is a Canadian pop singer/musician who has been supporting DeVotchKa on the “Mad and Faithful Telling” tour. Her music was interesting, I thought it sounded great live. I’m curious to hear how her albums are though. Her style is a mixture of pop, folk and indie rock and the crowd really liked her set. I’m not sure what songs she played but I prefer the more upbeat ones. The slow tracks were okay too but I’d rather hear faster songs.

In the beginning of the set, the crowd was still coming in so I didn’t sit in the photo pit, waiting for her to come on stage. Since I was standing up in the balcony with my brother and my girlfriend, I had to run downstairs when Basia hit the stage. She started off singing solo at the beginning of her set. After that, the rest of the band came out. Since I came late into the pit, I had to crawl over all the photographers that were already in the pit. For this set, the photographers had the chance to shoot for 4 songs I believe; it was definitely more than 3. The lighting was red again, but wasn’t as bad as Fancy Trash’s lighting. It was a lot more brighter, and thankfully other colors were used. I just can’t stand a whole set of red lighting. It’s funny how bright and colorful the lighting gets after 3 songs. I think the lighting guy likes to mess with the photographers. For lenses, I used all 3 that were in my bag (70-200mm f2.8, 50mm f1.4, 18-70mm f3.5-4.5) including my MIA lens from the previous set.
